Predictably his selections are informed, eclectic and uplifting, almost entirely cheerful stuff, and all the more moving for that. And I suspect this is the first time that Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass have been heard on Radio 3. (MP3 here)

When I’m listening to Desert Island Discs, I get frustrated because we’re not allowed to hear the whole piece of music and now I learn that when I’m allowed to hear the whole piece of music as in Private Passions, I just want to get back to the interview!
