Another Taste of Don’t Hang Up

January 1st, 2008 by Roo Reynolds

Would you pick up a ringing payphone?

Ever since Russell introduced us to the wonder of 'Don't Hang Up' last year, I've been snuffling around for more of it like some sort of radio pig with the scent of a delicious audio truffle. Or something.

The BBC re-broadcast two episodes recently.

Night Lines (MP3) is pretty dark. There's the conversation with a drunk teenager in Margate (which becomes increasingly disturbing and sad) a friendly Floridian security guard (which is also slightly disturbing in parts) and the tales of a hitchhiking transexual in New Zealand (which sounds like it might be disturbing, but turns out to be rather uplifting).

Will Santa Pick Up? (MP3) explores all things Christmas. I include it for completeness but also as a pick-me-up for anyone already missing the holiday season.

I’ve just listened to the Night Lines programme and I must say thnak you for flagging it up. Quite how radio manages to produce such simple and affecting material must be something the tv folk tear their hair out over.

Reminded me a bit of the the programme on the Apology Line Radio 4 did some years ago which I wish I still had a copy of.

Thanks all for such a great site and for showing people just how great the radio can be.

    Love and stuff

What a terrific programme this is. I commute with whatever I can find loaded into my mp3 player and the very natural editing of the telephone responses and emotive score from some very cultured dj leaves me loath ever to wipe this one. Genius.

    Long may you prosper Speechification!

I’m the founder of a site dedicated to phone box from all over the world. I’ve recently started this project up again. And have begun collecting payphone numbers. All numbers listed work and have been verified with a date. Also importantly all numbers are pair with a picture of the relevant payphone. I also received an arranged call from Alan to a phonebox on Portobello Road. Think it didn’t go to air as my words were very gumbled. Anyways, keeps you’re eyes on the site, I’ve got big and long term plans for it. Many thanks and do keep trying to make a call every now and then. Laters,… http://www.payphone.de.vu/
