The Night Air: Loco
February 23rd, 2008 by Dan HillThe Night Air can be a frustrating little programme. Sometimes too clever for its own good, the echoed, layered montage approach can lead to rapidly diminishing results. However, it’s experimental radio on the mainstream channel of a national broadcaster, so deserves to be on a loose leash. And this little show, on the world’s railways - something of a current obsession - is pretty good, with some lovely atmospheric moments … and some just plain silly. Personally, I can’t condone the slightly sniffy attitude to the greatest train service in the world, the Shinkansen, but it rather nicely covers many of the world’s other great train networks, with a sly Aussie irreverence crossed with a good solid dose of Kraftwerk.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for mentioning our show on your blog. Great to read a candid review of our work. We also have an unofficial blog at thenightair.net where we can more permanently archive our programs. I will see to it that the Loco one gets up there.
I really like what you are doing here on this blog and have it solidly bookmarked as well as subbing to your rss, great stuff

I love and adore ABC Radio National. I have visited Australia six or seven times and each time I have been on a long drive (especially) I have tuned into this station. My favourite presenter is/was Lucky Oceans - I think he presented my most favourite programmes I have ever heard. I’m glad to see you have mentioned ABC National on here too.
