The London Ear - Pet Shop Boys
June 20th, 2008 by Russell DaviesBen Thompson has a show on the estimable Resonance FM called The London Ear. He’s done a series of interviews with top folk, about music, London, life, cabbages and kings. But since Resonance can’t archive them all he’s given ten of them to us to stick up here. We won’t do them all at once but I had to start with this - his chat with the Pet Shop Boys. Excellent music, top chat, good anecdotes and an incredibly long version of Soft Cell’s Bedsitter. MP3 here.

Lovely. Funny too. Liked the bit about Neil Tennant coining the phrase ‘pervy synth duo’ for Eurythmics while at Smash Hits. Perfect. And Bedsitter was brilliant. I’m pretty sure I remember drinking in a seedy semi-gay basement bar called The Dive Bar too: owned by Maltese gangsters? Greek St?
Obviously it’s also a pleasure to note that we’ve now picked up the MP3 hosting burden for Resonance as well as Radio4!

The version of “Bedsitter” is indeed brilliant and as such is a version I’ve never heard before. The Joe Meek track is well worth a listen too - quite extraordinary ! An excellent interview with some great records, shame it wasn’t longer - please make sure you also include the other ’special’ programmes in this series if you can. Thanks. DW x

It’s a very interesting interview. I wish I could afford an mp3 player

A great interview, it’s always good to hear Neil & Chris on any radioshow thesedays, as they are always good value. The version of “Bedsitter” was excellent btw & the Joe Meek track was hilarious! Good stuff Resonance FM!…

Neil & Chris are so precious! ALWAYS fascinating to listen to what they have to say about… well, just about anything, really!
And another thing I can now add into the Pet Shop Boys versus …. (add a noun that they don’t like!) list.
Neil versus Diet Coke ;-)
What a BRAVE new addition to my list that includes “Pet Shop Boys versus the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame,” “Chris versus oysters,” “Neil versus pebbles,” and many more. ;-)
God, I LOVE Pet Shop Boys!
