Arthur Smith sings Leonard Cohen

August 26th, 2008 by Steve Bowbrick

Not, I’ll grant, important radio. Not ground-breaking. Just a performer you’ll know well, pushing beyond the boundaries of his career so far and… well… singing Leonard Cohen. Brave stuff—with many good gags and a kind of melancholy, which I suppose is borrowed from Cohen’s words. Lovely (MP3).

I’m glad you’re bringing more attention to this. As a Yankee who just started closely following UK media recently, I didn’t know Arthur Smith too much before I heard this. I mainly knew him as a contestant on some comedy quiz/chat shows. He seemed genial and funny in that context.

But I listened to this some months ago and found it an absolute joy. Smart, moving, hilarious, tinged with melancholy, and absolutely assured and masterful in creating mood.

It had slipped my mind but I think I’ll listen again now. Kudos.

Yeah, I agree. I heard him do this years ago and very happy to hear it again. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this. Have been enjoying this site for some time now so feel a comment is long overdue. I have been looking for a recording of this show for years so you have just made me very happy. One of my favourite comedy shows of all time. And if you knew my obsession for comedy you’d know that was very high praise. Thanks again.
