The Little Red Schoolbook

In Living Memory is an excellent little cultural documentary series, and this episode recalls the small paperback published in 1971 which advised children about sex, drugs and how to assert their rights at school. Although banned as an obscene publication, the book continued to be distributed by radical groups, becoming something of a cause celebre in the process.     This book was still current when I was at a boys’ secondary school in the mid-seventies. Schoolboys being essentially horny anarchists we found the whole thing very exciting. The librarian had a copy behind his desk (maybe the censored version) and periodically we’d all get stoked up and stage half-baked sit-ins when something showed up from the Schools Action Union. Heady days…
