Quantum Cello

Zoe Keating is a remarkable cellist that uses sampling in order to “play with past versions of herself.” With her Mac laptop, haunting loops of music emerge as she uses her feet to shift, start and stop samples, striking on the instrument itself to create percussive rhythms. In this piece from WNYC’s Radiolab, Keating recalls her discovery of music looping as a device and how it feels to hear the same mistake being repeated over and over.

I saw Keating live at PopTech last year - symphonic music coming from one musician is transcendent and transposing. You can see the video of her performance here: PopTech Popcast - Zoe Keating
